2012 Epting/Mathews Co-op Student of the Year

2013 Co-op Student of the YearShaquia is a biomedical engineering major from Virginia who co-oped with NASA Langley for four terms. While there, she developed biofeedback systems, assisted with research, and investigated pilot/operator phychophysiological states in an effort to abate operator error. She also designed and submitted an original research proposal to Langley’s Institutional Review Board. NASA awarded Shaquia the designation of NASA scholar; a designation that was awarded as part of a competition against 300 other applicants where only 20 were chosen to receive the award. She is the first from MSU to be chosen.

According to her mentor at NASA “Over the years I have worked with many students pursuing engineering and science careers, and few are as determined and as hard working as Shaquia. She has shown herself to be polite, responsible, intelligent, committed, capable and eager to learn”

While at Mississippi State, she has earned the honor of being on the Presidents list for several semesters. Besides being an excellent student herself, she provides tutoring for the Boys and Girls Club of Oktibbeha County and has also acted as a tutor for our athletics program. According to her faculty reference, Dr. Warnock, “Shaquia has demonstrated initiative in the department by actively seeking out research opportunities with the faculty‚Ķ..and has recently been offered a research position in the department”
